Team Goals

This season we are going to work on psychological, physical, technical and tactical issues.
  • Psychologically, its courage we are looking for.  Learn a new move, have the courage to fail at it in practice until you succeed.
  • Physically, we are increasing our balance, agility, speed and strength.  Protect ourselves from injury, overcome being bumped and work at speed.
  • Technically, our 1v1, passing, receiving and striking skills.  Let's hone these skills.
  • And tactics in offense we are looking for thru, wall and overlap passing. Let's get that triangle to work for us.  On defense, let's master the pressure, cover/balance.

Team Goals

Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts. - John Wooden

Things we expect from each other on our team:

Enthusiasm - Have Fun

Challenge each other to be courageous

Industriousness - Play Hard

You must fail to succeed, allow yourself to make mistakes; learn by them at practice and dazzle at the game
Possession is the name of the game this season.  Don't give up the ball! Protect, support and assist each other.

Protect: When in trouble screen the ball, look for support from behind
When dribbling to advance, do it with speed, head up, looking for options
When in the mid-field, look forward for quick advancement options, then advance
When in front, always look for scoring opportunity, either for yourself or teammate

Things we do to be the best team we can be:

Condition

Balance, speed and agility

Skill

Everyone juggle 25 times by end of season
Strike properly with both feet.
Pass with accuracy and pace, one touch to others.
Receive in control and into space

Thru, wall and overlap

Team Spirit

We have many new and some developing players.  Encourage the ones learning, show them new skills.
Put forward your best effort an expect the same from your teammates.
Have a team ritual for entering the field at the start and leaving it at the end of a game and training.

Team Principles

I've always admired Coach John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success".  Not only did he lead great teams, but he taught valuable life skills.
We are going to emphasize five blocks from his pyramid with the team.  The first two I have always valued: "Have Fun and Play Hard".

Things we expect from each other on our team:

These you bring with you to the field.

Enthusiasm - Have Fun

Have enthusiasm for what you are doing.  Enjoy the sport; play with heart; savor the opportunity to compete.  Lacking enthusiasm brings everyone down.
Play because you love it, not for the score.  This guarantees your success on the field.

Industriousness - Play Hard

Because of your enthusiasm, working hard feels like play.  Put in your full effort at practices.
Putting in all of the efforts will be rewarded by making the game more enjoyable just from the feeling of accomplishing a new move or team combination.
The games are an opportunity to show that your efforts at practices have increased your skill and awareness of the game.

Things we do to be the best team we can be:

These we work on at training sessions.

Condition

Be mentally and physically prepared for each practice and game.  We will be adding more conditioning to our practices.
The drills and games will be of higher intensity, include more running, jumping and turns.

Skill

Learn the skills of the game.  Execute quickly and properly.  The skills we will work on this year include both individual skills and small group tactics.

As individuals there are many named dribble skills and moves to master, but creativity is what we are striving for.
Who knows maybe they'll name a move after you.

We will continue to strengthen our ball striking, passing and receiving skills.  These skills lead to fast paced team play.

As a team, we will be working on passing and small team tactics.

Team Spirit

Put in 100% effort during games and practices.  Encourage each other, challenge each other.  Teach each other.

Eagerness to sacrifice personal glory for welfare of all.  Look not only for opportunities for yourself, but be aware of your teammates and the opportunities that they have.
Assisting in a goal is as glorious as scoring yourself.
